The Arkansas basketball team is known nationally as a team that
can beat anyone at home, but can lose to anyone on the road.
With 19 wins last season, no one expected the Razorbacks to be
selected for the NCAA Tournament, but that many wins would normally earn a spot
in the NIT. An NIT bid was even more likely because Arkansas beat No. 2 Florida
during the season.
However, the NIT selection committee passed on the Razorbacks.
Many fans were surprised, but considering the team’s 1-12 record outside of the
state, the omission is understandable.
In two and a half years under head coach Mike Anderson, Arkansas
is only 3-24 outside of its home state. That is a winning percentage of just
.120, compared to an .898 winning percentage at home.
Arkansas’ Southeastern Conference road schedule includes tough
trips to Missouri and Kentucky, as well as Tennessee and LSU. All four of those
teams are projected to make the NCAA Tournament, according to Joe Lunardi’s
bracketology released Thursday.
The Razorbacks picked up a win over Minnesota at the Maui
Invitational earlier in the season, but they must win several more games away
from Bud Walton Arena, against SEC competition, if they want to play in the
postseason.
This is the 22nd of a series of short articles about the Arkansas basketball team. Each
day leading up to SEC play, I will post an entry about something basketball
related that starts with the next letter of the alphabet. Here are links to the
previous entries, as well as the dates for the last four…
