Senior guard Fred Gulley III has had an impact at Arkansas in his
first full season with the Razorbacks.
The Fayetteville native started his collegiate career at Oklahoma
State, where he appeared in 48 games and averaged 2.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and
1.2 assists per game.
Gulley transferred to Arkansas after the fall 2011 semester and
had to sit out the following spring and fall semesters because of NCAA transfer
rules.
After sitting out, he played 21 games and started nine with the
Razorbacks last season. In those games, he averaged 1.5 points and 1.3 rebounds
per game.
His statistical impact this season, through 10 games, is slightly
higher than his career numbers, but his overall impact goes beyond stats.
He is one of eight Razorbacks to appear in all 10 games and has
started the second-most games on the team, with nine starts.
Gulley’s main assignment has been playing the position many people
thought was Arkansas’ weakest spot this season: point guard.
His 22 assists are second-most behind Michael Qualls, but his 3.1
assist-to-turnover ratio is the best on the team.
Scoring has not been one of Gulley’s strengths, but nearly
one-fourth of his points this season came against Minnesota, in the Razorbacks’
only win at the Maui Invitational.
For Arkansas to have success this season, it will need consistent
production from its point guard.
Even with Rashad Madden providing solid point guard play in recent
games, Gulley’s play will still be important because head coach Mike Anderson’s
“Fastest 40” style of basketball requires fresh legs.
