The Arkansas men’s tennis team opened its season with a strong outing in doubles play, but struggled in singles play.
Both of Arkansas’ pairings advanced to the next round of the doubles tournament at the Southeastern Comference Fall Classic, while they were 0-8 in the singles tournament.
Seniors Mike Nott and Manfred Jeske lived up to their No. 3 seed, defeating a Tennessee pair 8-2, while junior Jovan Parlic and senior Pete Thomason, the No. 8 seed, defeated a Texas A&M pair by the same score.
They each received a first round bye, so they advance to the third round, where they will face doubles teams from Florida and Vanderbilt, respectively. The Gators’ pair advanced with an 8-5 victory over an Alabama pair, while the Commodores beat a pair from Auburn 8-6.
Six of the Razorbacks’ eight singles players lost in two sets, with sophomore Santiago Munoz and senior Hall Fess pushing their matches to three sets before losing.
All eight will continue play Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the consolation round. Both Arkansas pairs will play in the third round at 7 a.m.
