The Arkansas volleyball team defeated Saint Louis in straight
sets Saturday to close out non-conference play with a 7-4 record.
Despite losing to Kansas State in straight sets in the first
game of the Razorback Invitational, the Razorbacks rebounded by dominating the
Billikens, winning 25-18, 25-22 and 25-10.
“We knew it was an important match for us,” head coach Robert
Pulliza said. “It was our last non-conference opponent and we wanted to make
sure we were the team we wanted to be going into SEC play.”
During the match, Arkansas registered a .378 hitting percentage,
their highest of the season.
After sophomore Monica Bollinger collected an ace to clinch the
first set, Saint Louis bounced back and tied the second set at 19-19. However,
senior Raymariely Santos picked up two kills, including the game-winner, while
leading the Razorbacks to a 6-3 finish.
In the final set, Arkansas jumped out to a 9-2 lead before
winning 25-10. It was the largest set victory of the season for the Razorbacks.
By notching a team-high 12 digs, senior Emily Helm moved into
19th place on the UA career digs list, with 646. Ashley Miller is the all-time
leader, with 2,126 from 2004-2007.
Freshman Breana Jones and sophomore Summer Morgan earned
All-Tournament honors for their performances against Saint Louis and Kansas
State. They combined for 32 kills and 14 blocks over the two games.
Arkansas had been scheduled to play South Alabama at 11 a.m.
Saturday, but the Jaguars did not make the trip because of “widespread injury
and illness throughout the team,” according to a press release by the South
Alabama athletic department.
The
Razorbacks begin Southeastern Conference play on the road against Ole Miss
Friday and Mississippi State Sunday. The matches are scheduled to start at 7
p.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
