The Arkansas women’s soccer team improved their program-best record to 5-0 with a 1-0 shutout against Tulsa at Razorback Field Wednesday.
Several near misses by the Razorbacks throughout the first half, including a few that sailed just over the crossbar, kept the score at zero apiece. They had a final chance right before the half, but freshman Claire Kelley’s header was blocked as time expired.
Arkansas outshot the Golden Hurricane 8-1 in the first half.
“We just told them to keep doing what they’re doing,” head coach Colby Hale said. “We felt like we were playing well. We just thought that if we kept doing it, we’d get a goal eventually.”
They finally got on the scoreboard in the 66th minute with a goal by freshman Alexandra Fischer. It was Fischer’s first goal of her career.
Senior Taylor Green and freshman Katherine Moore each assisted on the goal.
Despite not registering a goal, sophomore Ashleigh Ellenwood made her presence felt. Ellenwood, the team leader with three goals, “created a ton of chances” for the Razorbacks, Hale said.
“It was a complete team effort,” Hale said. “I thought the kids fought and battled.”
Fischer was the eighth different Razorback to score a goal this season.
The Razorbacks dominated almost the entire game, outshooting Tulsa 15-4. For the third straight game, they held their opponent to no shots on goal.
Along with improving their record to 5-0 for the first time in school history, Arkansas completed their fourth shutout of the season, tying the UA record for most shutouts through the first five games of a season.
Their two goals allowed this season are tied for the UA record for fewest through the first five games of a season, as well. Both records tie marks set in 2009.
“We don’t really get into that,” Hale said. “That’s not really our concern right now. We’ll celebrate that stuff at the end of the season.”
Arkansas returns to action Sunday against Nebraska in Fayetteville. The game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. and will be televised on CST.
