TAT: Sports News You Should Know (Oct. 16)


These news briefs were originally compiled for the October 16, 2013 issue of The Arkansas Traveler.

Named as the first chairman of the College Football Playoff Selection Committee, Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long. The College Football Playoff will begin in the 2014 season.
Picked to finish 12th in the Southeastern Conference this season, the Arkansas women’s basketball team. Tennessee was picked to win the conference.
Selected as the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance against No. 14 South Carolina, junior punter Sam Irwin-Hill. He averaged 53.5 yards per punt and downed one inside the 20-yard line. His 77-yard punt was tied for seventh longest in UA history.
Announced that they would play a football game at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2016, Tennessee and Virginia Tech. The racetrack is located halfway between the two schools and will have a football seating capacity of approximately 150,000.
Announced as the semi-permanent location for the SEC basketball tournament, Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn. The arena will host nine men’s tournaments and three women’s tournaments from 2015 to 2026.
Broke his leg against South Carolina Saturday, Arkansas senior defensive tackle Robert Thomas. He had surgery Sunday night and will miss the rest of the season, ending his career with the Razorbacks. Thomas had 31 tackles and 3.5 sacks this season.
Expected to miss the rest of the regular season with a separated shoulder, Missouri quarterback James Franklin. However, Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel said Monday that Franklin would be out three to five weeks.
Ruled out for the rest of the season with a torn meniscus in his left knee, Florida running back Matt Jones. He had 50 yards on 17 carries for the Gators against the Razorbacks Oct. 5. Jones is the seventh Florida player, and fourth starter, to suffer a season-ending injury.
Injured his quadriceps during the Dallas Cowboys’ 31-16 victory over the Washington Redskins Sunday, Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Ware. Ware has not missed a game since coming into the NFL in 2005, but the injury is expected to keep him out three to four weeks.
Verbally committed to LSU to play basketball, Australian power forward Ben Simmons. He is the No. 4 recruit in the Class of 2015, according to ESPN, and is 6-foot-10, 230-pounds. Simmons was also offered by Kansas, Kentucky and Duke, among others.
Donated a kidney to his sister, Memphis assistant basketball coach Robert Kirby. His mother died of kidney failure in 1996, and he didn’t want his sister to suffer the same fate. Kirby said he hopes to be back at practice in a couple weeks.
Deleted her twitter account after a frustrating loss, former Arkansas women’s golfer Stacy Lewis. She lost the Reignwood LPGA Classic in China last week after Shanshan Feng won on an eagle on the 18th hole thanks to an interesting bounce. Afterward, Lewis vented her frustration with the crowd on Twitter, before announcing that she would delete her account. Lewis is the No. 3 women’s golfer in the world.
