After
trailing by six strokes entering the final round, the No. 12 Arkansas men’s
golf team scored a 4-under 284 to secure their first team victory of the season
at the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate Tuesday.
The
Razorbacks shot a 306 in the first round, but bounced back Monday by shooting a
second round 285.
Led by
senior Sebastian Cappelen, who won the individual title, the Razorbacks used
three players that scored under-par to jump No. 8 Georgia, No. 15 Florida State
and Purdue and win the team title.
“I’m
really proud of the way Sebastian played through the whole tournament and I’m
really happy for the team because they put together two great rounds,” head
coach Brad McMakin. “It’s very difficult to win a tournament and to do it after
a disappointing first round takes a lot of composure.
“The
final 36 holes were a complete team effort and performances like this are what
we know these guys are capable of.”
Cappelen
shot a final round 71 to finish the tournament 4-under par and three strokes ahead
of Purdue’s Adam Schenk. It was the fourth individual title of his career.
The
14-team field included four other top 25 teams, but the Razorbacks managed to
account for the only two team rounds under par during the tournament. In fact,
of the 17 individual rounds under par, Arkansas accounted for seven of them.
Sophomore
Taylor Moore and junior Thomas Sorensen each shot a 2-under 70 Tuesday to
finish in the top 15. Moore finished tied for eighth, while Sorensen tied for
12th.
Purdue
finished second in the tournament with a score of 880, followed closely by one
of Arkansas’ Southeastern Conference foes, Georgia, which shot a 881. The only
other SEC team in the tournament was Florida and they finished seventh.
The
Razorbacks’ fall season will conclude with the Isleworth Collegiate
Invitational in Windermere, Fla., Oct. 20-22.
