NWA Times: Bentonville Black vs. Springdale George

This article originally appeared in the October 11, 2013 issue of The NWA Times.
(NOTE: This was a cool experience for me. Seven years ago, I was a player for George Jr. High, but last night, I was in the press box covering a GJH game for the local paper. It was hard for me to watch my alma mater lose, but it made me smile seeing how much they have improved in the past seven years.)

Bentonville Black 14, Springdale George 13 (OT)

THE GAME: Regulation was not enough for George (3-3, 0-2) and Black (3-3, 1-1). It took an overtime period and a goal-line stand on a two-point conversion attempt for the Tigers to pull off the victory.

Black almost exclusively ran a wildcat package in the second half, but facing a third-and-goal from the 14 in the overtime period, it reinserted quarterback Hunter Laney.

Laney connected with Tyler Pike on a screen pass that Pike took to the end zone to give the Tigers a 14-7 lead.

"It's something that we practiced all week," Black coach Chris Hutchens said. "A lot of times, screens don't look that good in practice, but in games they look a lot better. Everyone did their job."

The Wranglers responded with a 1-yard touchdown run by Lucky Bannavong and elected to go for two points and the win. However, Black's defense met Bannavong in the backfield to seal the game.

Bannavong scored the first touchdown of the game in the second quarter on a 30-yard run and finished with 109 yards on 17 carries. Jacob Clark led the Tigers with 144 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.

There were two eighth-grade games. Van Buren beat Bentonville Washington 27-26 in the first game, while Bentonville Fulbright beat George 32-0 in the second game.

UP NEXT: Bentonville Black travels to Siloam Springs next week, while George returns home to face Fayetteville Ramay.
