THE GAME: Bentonville Black (2-2) used a steady rushing attack by Jacob Clark and Tyler Pike to edge Springdale Southwest (0-4) at Tiger Stadium on Thursday.

The Cougars got on the board first with a 38-yard run by Trey Smith, but Clark answered on the Tigers' next offensive play, running 70 yards for a touchdown.

On Black's next possession, it drove 96 yards on 13 plays, capped by an 11-yard run by Pike

After Southwest tied the game on a 5-yard run by Smith in the third quarter, the Tigers gave the ball to Pike. He gained all 39 yards on Black's game-winning drive with two and a half minutes left.

"Tyler Pike stepped up and ran the ball hard in the second half," Black coach Chris Hutchens said. "We weren't very diverse. They knew what was coming and we were still able to do it."

Pike and Clark combined for 247 yards rushing for the Tigers, while Smith had 138 all-purpose yards for the Cougars.

Southwest beat Bentonville Lincoln 42-7 in the eighth-grade game.
