TAT: Familiar Faces in MLB Playoffs

This article originally appeared on October 9, 2013 on The Arkansas Traveler website, uatrav.com.

The Major League Baseball playoffs are in full swing and as students and Arkansas fans watch their favorite teams, they are likely to see some familiar faces on the pitcher’s mound.
Seven pitchers that have appeared in this year’s playoffs faced the Razorbacks while in college. There was a stretch from 2005 to 2012 in which Arkansas faced at least one of these pitchers.
Together, they have appeared in 19 games and have a 7-3 record with a 2.34 ERA against the Razorbacks.
Here is a look at each pitcher and how they did versus Arkansas.

TAT: Hines Out At Least Six Weeks

This article originally appeared on October 7, 2013 on The Arkansas Traveler website, uatrav.com.

Five players on the Arkansas football team suffered injuries in Saturday’s 30-10 loss at No. 18 Florida, but only one should miss playing time, head coach Bret Bielema said at his weekly Monday press conference.
Sophomore cornerback Will Hines broke his arm in the second half of the game and was carted off after his arm was put in an air cast.
His arm was set in Gainesville, Fla., Saturday night and he had surgery Sunday in Fayetteville, Bielema said.
Initially, it was thought that Hines would miss the rest of the season, as he tweeted Sunday, “Can’t believe my season ended this early.”
However, Bielema said that he should only miss six weeks if the recovery goes well.
“Will is a tremendous tweeter,” Bielema said. “I know he said his season was done, but he was informed today that there was a very good chance he could make it back for the last two regular season games.”
In his place, the Razorbacks will use a rotation of three players. Junior Carroll Washington is listed at the top of the depth chart, with freshmen D.J. Dean and Jared Collins listed as backups.
The only other player that could miss practice time because of an injury suffered against the Gators is senior center Travis Swanson.
Swanson suffered a slight MCL injury in the third quarter and did not return to the game. Although he was “a little tender” Sunday and might be held out of Tuesday’s practice, Bielema said he should be able to play Saturday.
Sophomore running back Jonathan Williams, freshman tight end Hunter Henry and sophomore quarterback Brandon Allen also suffered minor injuries Saturday, but all were able to return to the game.
Henry was hit on a bruise he has been battling since the Sept. 7 game against Samford and Williams was a “little banged up” during the Florida game, Bielema said. Both will play Saturday.
Junior AJ Derby played one series Saturday after Allen’s hand was stepped on, but Allen came back in and finished the game at quarterback. It was the first game action he missed since missing the entire Rutgers game with a shoulder injury suffered in the Southern Miss game.
“(Allen) is as good as he’s been since the (shoulder) injury,” Bielema said. “We have to protect him and do things better up front to make sure he doesn’t take any hits.”
The Razorbacks play No. 14 South Carolina in the Homecoming game Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:21 a.m. and the game will air nationally on SEC TV.

Worst Sports Weekend Ever

Being a graduate of Springdale High School, a student at the University of Arkansas and a fan of these teams, as well as the Dallas Cowboys and St. Louis Cardinals, has its advantages and downfalls.

All four teams have enjoyed at least some success in my lifetime, but every once in a while, a perfect storm results in great disappointment. This weekend had to be one of the worst sports weekends of my life.

Here's a day-by-day breakdown of how the Bulldogs, Razorbacks, Cowboys and Cardinals broke my heart this weekend.

Friday

The Cardinals got things started Friday afternoon, getting demolished by the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-1 in Game 2 of the NLDS.

After scoring nine runs in Game 1, the only run the Cardinals could muster came on a solo home run by Yadier Molina. They only had four hits the entire game. FOUR.

It got worse Friday night, when Springdale lost to Fayetteville High in the Battle of the Bulldogs 38-14. It was the fifth consecutive year Fayetteville beat Springdale, which last happened from 1938-1942. That was 71 years ago. SEVENTY-ONE.

The Red 'Dogs played well for two and a half quarters, as they scored a touchdown with 5:54 left in the third quarter to pull within three points, but it was all Purple 'Dogs after that.

Saturday

The Razorbacks kept the ball rolling Saturday night at "The Swamp." Arkansas looked really good for one and half quarters, before Brandon Allen threw a pick-six and they never regained the lead.

There was a stretch of only a few plays in which Will Hines broke his arm, Travis Swanson injured his knee, Brandon Allen injured his hand and Hunter Henry had to come out of the game with an injury.

Even ESPN didn't want to finish the game, as they experience "technical difficulties" during the last couple of minutes that caused the television audience to miss a little bit of Arkansas' last gasp effort to cut into the Gators' lead. It came up short and Florida won 30-10.

Sunday

Game 3 of the NLDS and the Cowboys-Broncos game started almost simultaneously and mirrored each other down the stretch.

I spent most of the afternoon flipping back and forth between the Cardinals game on TBS and the Cowboys game on CBS.

Much to my surprise, the Cowboys played really well against the undefeated Broncos and Peyton Manning. Tony Romo played a heck of a game, throwing for 506 yards and five touchdowns, but in the end, he was still Tony Romo and threw the interception that led to the game-winning field goal for the Broncos.

The Cardinals got behind early, as the Pirates scored two runs in the first inning, but they responded with a pair of runs in the fifth to tie the game. They got behind again in the sixth and Carlos Beltran tied it in the top of the eighth with a solo home run.

Right after flipping back to the Cowboys game after Beltran's home run, Romo threw a touchdown to take the lead against the Broncos.

I was ecstatic, but my joy was short lived. I flipped back to the baseball game in time to see the Pirates not only take the lead, but also add an insurance run. Then, you guessed it, I flipped to the football game to see Peyton Manning throw his fourth touchdown pass of the game and tie the game.

Later, I saw the Pirates make the final out of the game to take a 2-1 lead in the NLDS and 53 seconds after that, I saw the Broncos kick the game-winning field goal as time expired against the Cowboys. FIFTY-THREE SECONDS. I know because I timed it.

All in all, it was a depressing weekend. I can only hope the next will be better.

TAT: Hogs Cap Razorback Classic With Pair of Doubles Wins

This article originally appeared October 6, 2013 on The Arkansas Traveler website, uatrav.com.

The Arkansas women’s tennis team ended the Razorback Classic in Fayetteville with a pair of wins in doubles play and one in singles play Sunday.
For the weekend, the Razorbacks were 3-3 in doubles and 4-8 in singles.
Freshman Shannon Hudson won her first two singles matches and advanced to the U.S. Open Flight championship, but fell to Auburn’s Reka Muller in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-2.
In the Wimbledon Flight, sophomore Brittany Huxley defeated Auburn’s Ashley Kitchen Friday, but lost her final two singles matches.
The only Arkansas athlete to collect a victory in singles play Sunday was sophomore Flavia Araujo, who beat Kitchen in straight sets.
After the Razorbacks won only one doubles match in the first two days of competition, they won both of their doubles matches Sunday.
Araujo teamed up with Tulsa’s Carol Benito to beat a doubles team from Northwestern State, while Hudson and Huxley defeated a pair from Auburn.
"We definitely finished strong in doubles today," head coach Michael Hegarty said. "It was an excellent tournament overall and we continue to develop good habits during these critical fall events."
Sophomore Kristen Mee was the only athlete for Arkansas that failed to pick up a singles victory in the tournament.
The Razorbacks return to action Oct. 18 at the ITA Central Regional championships in Norman, Okla.

TBH: SEC Refs

This article originally appeared in the November 2010 issue of The Bulldog Herald.
(NOTE: I wrote this column during my junior year at Springdale High School after the Arkansas-Auburn game. With Arkansas playing Florida tonight, it made me remember the terrible calls the last time they visited the Swamp. Hope you enjoy; this is one of my all-time favorites.)

SECond to All None

As a die-hard Razorback fan, I just absolutely HATE love the atrocious fabulous refereeing by the SEC officials. The calls they have made the past few years have been completely awful fair.

In particular, I’d like to strangle commend the refs from the Florida game last year and the Auburn game this year. The way they choked under handled the pressure of calling a game with national championship implications was truly amazing.

Malcolm Sheppard was only playing football obviously unsportsmanlike when he hit the Florida lineman and deserved to be on Sports Center’s top ten plays penalized. The refs were also blatantly wrong correct in their no-calls of pass interference in the end zone and delay of game on one of Florida’s field goals.

The replay officials in the Auburn game did a horrific an excellent job with the upheld touchdown run and fumble recovery for a touchdown. It was sad nice to see such a wonderful piece of technology like instant replay being used to destroy the chances of Arkansas winning for the integrity of the game.

Like any good fan, I wanted to shoot the referees after both of these games enjoyed the fair, hard fought battles between Arkansas and their highly ranked conference foes. The SEC did an outstanding job in paying off choosing their referees in these big games.

How they have protected treated their Heisman Trophy candidates the way a mother protects her young same as any other normal player should also be addressed commended. The refs solidified Tim Tebow and Cam Newton as Heisman candidates by helping their teams win. Tim Tebow and Cam Newton solidified their Heisman candidacy with big wins for their teams.

It is perfectly understandable unfortunate that fans in Arkansas have been upset about these games. I mean, an eye doctor offering the refs free eye surgery? Give this guy a raise! That is just immature and unprofessional. A church with a sign reading “There is hope for the SEC refs: Jesus makes the blind see”? I want to go to church there! Although we live in the south, churches should not be concerned with a football game.

So thank you SEC refs, for screwing Arkansas over providing us with such fair, thrilling games. I will always remember the Florida and Auburn games as the games that proved to me that the SEC gets their referees from the nearest School of the Blind made me fall in love with the sport of football all over again.

NWA Times: Bentonville Black vs. Springdale Southwest

This article originally appeared in the September 27, 2013 issue of The NWA Times.

Bentonville Black 21, Springdale Southwest 14

THE GAME: Bentonville Black (2-2) used a steady rushing attack by Jacob Clark and Tyler Pike to edge Springdale Southwest (0-4) at Tiger Stadium on Thursday.

The Cougars got on the board first with a 38-yard run by Trey Smith, but Clark answered on the Tigers' next offensive play, running 70 yards for a touchdown.

On Black's next possession, it drove 96 yards on 13 plays, capped by an 11-yard run by Pike

After Southwest tied the game on a 5-yard run by Smith in the third quarter, the Tigers gave the ball to Pike. He gained all 39 yards on Black's game-winning drive with two and a half minutes left.

"Tyler Pike stepped up and ran the ball hard in the second half," Black coach Chris Hutchens said. "We weren't very diverse. They knew what was coming and we were still able to do it."

Pike and Clark combined for 247 yards rushing for the Tigers, while Smith had 138 all-purpose yards for the Cougars.

Southwest beat Bentonville Lincoln 42-7 in the eighth-grade game.

UP NEXT: Bentonville Black travels to Fayetteville Ramay next week, while Southwest returns home to face Springdale Lakeside.
